Passion
Have you ever stopped to think
what exactly it is you feel passion for? Let me
tell you when I discovered my love for growing plants of
all kind.
I can
remember vividly the day my mother stopped by the
house. She was on her way home from one of the local gardening centers.
I took
four small tomatoes plants. I did not realize at that moment
she was helping
to release something in me that I had no idea would keep me in the arms
of the one I love. Both of us was unaware of what was
happening. She only stopped to give me the plants. They were really for
my children.
Up to that
point in my life I had never looked at myself as
a gardener. The reason being, the only experience that I could recall
growing
anything was in grade school. You know the little paper cups with a
little bit
of dirt and a seed or two in them. In addition, all you had to do was
sit the
cup in the windowsill and wait.
Anyway, I
gladly took them from the back seat of her car. I
thanked her for bringing me the tomatoes, and proceeded to take them to
the
back yard. As I was walking, the thought crossed my mind as to what am
I going
to do with these plants. The thought of them being a gift from my
mother
weighed heavy on my mind, I just could not throw them in the back yard
somewhere.

Knowing she would
be back to check on them. And because of the love I have for
my mother, I did not
want
to let her down. The simplest thing that came to mind was to simply dig
four
holes and drop them in, and hope for the best. The only place in the
yard soft
enough to dig a decent hole was next to a tree. The ground was
extremely hard
from the children, running and playing in the backyard all day.
I knew enough that
after I dug the holes I should water them. From that day forward, my
intense enthusiasm
is
still driving me to learn all I can about gardening. That did not make
me an
expert. I still had to learn about what tomatoes eat and how much
sunlight they
need. Each day, after arriving home from work, my first thoughts were
of the
plants.
After work,
the backyard was the first stop to check on the
tomatoes. I was looking to see if anything had happened to them since
the
previous day. To my surprise, they looked to be growing somewhat
taller.
The following
Saturday, like clockwork on one of our family
outings to the half-off bookstore. The gardening section was
all
that
mattered. Consequently, there were many different books to choose from.
There
was no way of knowing which one would give the best information. In
seeking out
knowledge about a subject, passion was driving me to research the best
environment and food for the tomatoes. The book had to have pictures
and
diagrams. It would need to have examples graphs and ways to measure
progress.
There were so
many titles. After settling on a
book to read
.There was excitement in just reading about gardening, more excited
about the
thought of gardening. With just that little bit of reading I wanted to
till up
half the backyard and plant everything I could. Then you find the the
thing
that drives your will. There is an abundance of energy, creativity and
contentment.
